Harrison Ford is ending his run as Indiana Jones this summer, and while promoting Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,
the actor reflected on another big franchise he used to be involved in; Star Wars.
Ford appeared in the original Star Wars trilogy and returned to the role of Han Solo in the sequel trilogy to see out his time as the character.
When discussing the Star Wars saga, Ford made it clear that he was certain the original movie was going to be a hit for one reason; everyone loves a good fairy tale.
He then broke down why he felt so strongly about the chances of the movie becoming something special.
He said: “Did I think they might be successful films?
It might have seemed odd to the British crew when we were making the first “Star Wars.”
They might have said, “What’s going on here?” Like, there’s a seven-foot-tall man in a dog suit. There’s also a beautiful princess, a wise old warrior and a callow youth. Then, there’s a smartass—I know the part I play (laughs). And it’s fun!
I thought, “This is a fairy tale.” This kind of story has always been successful, whether it’s a written or filmed fairy tale. At that point in my career, it didn’t matter to me that the film would become hugely successful and end up changing movie history…But I was grateful because it changed my life. I had opportunities that extended beyond director George Lucas’ and my success in making that film. It gave me freedom and opportunities that I never had imagined I might have.”
Star Wars Goes Beyond Sci-Fi, and Will Continue To Do So In Future.
Science Fiction is a genre that used to have a very simple focus – it was a what if genre based on what science could possibly achieve and lead to in future from robots, spaceships, and AI to other worlds and alien species. However there are very few sci-fi movies, shows and books that don’t stray into other genres and Star Wars certainly does that on a frequent basis.
Drifting into fantasy and horror, with a decent helping of drama thrown in, Star Wars has never just been a sci-fi series, and Ford’s comments about it being essentially a fairy tale is not far from the truth. There are princesses, evil parents, manipulation of children, monsters hiding in the dark all contained in a mystical and wondrous world where anything is possible. Also, like many fairy tales, the ending is always one that leaves a path open to ask what happens after the happily ever after. Star Wars will be asking that question for some time to come with the latest plans for the franchise’s future spanning many years and shooting off in many directions. While Harrison Ford may now be done with the role of Han Solo in the franchise, he can rest in the knowledge that he was one of those who helped make the whole thing possible from the start.
