On screen he has faced Nazis, Soviet spies, Darth Vader… Now, Harrison Ford has found a new fight.
This Tuesday he expressed before Congress his opposition to the automatic budget cuts (the so-called fiscal sequestration) that have come into force in the United States.
“This financing mechanism has serious problems,” the 70-year-old Hollywood legend assured the members of the Aviation Commission.
The actor, who has been an amateur pilot for two decades, is especially concerned about the budget cuts that affect the aviation industry and could mean
– according to official figures – the closure of more than 200 control towers at airports.
Significant cuts in federal budget spending, valued at some $85 billion, came into effect on March 1,
as a result of the inability of Republicans and Democrats to agree on how to reduce the deficit.
“When a tower is closed, all related activities are eliminated. This has great consequences for small businesses,” warned the actor, who also warned about the consequences of these cuts in terms of security.
The cuts, of about 500 million dollars in the budget of the federal aviation agency (FAA), will also affect the fight against fires, the spraying of pesticides in the fields and even the training of pilots.
