Katy Perry is to be honoured by LGBT charity The Trevor Project with a Hero Award for helping increase visibility and understanding of the community.

The ‘Part Of Me’ star will be presented with an award this December at the charity’s annual gala event in Hollywood, for the empowering nature of her music and her work to help support equality.

“Everyone deserves a wonderful, fulfilled life,” Katy said in a statement about the hour. “Our sexual orientation or gender identity doesn’t change the spark and beauty within.

“I’m honoured that The Trevor Project has selected me to receive the Trevor Hero Award,” she continued. “Their work has inspired me since 2010, and I know they help save lives.”

The Trevor Project aims to help prevent suicide in gay and lesbian youths and provides a phone and online service for those struggling with their sexuality.

“As an ally for the LGBTQ community, Perry has supported equality and the freedom to marry,” a statement from the charity reads, regarding their decision to honour the pop star. She inspires LGBTQ youth to find their spark through her video ‘Firework’.

Katy Perry has performed at a number of charity events over the past several weeks as she continues to work on the follow-up to her 2010 album ‘Teenage Dream’.
