When Fisher and Ford filmed Star Wars: Episode V, Ford was married to his first wife, Mary Marquardt
The two had been married for nearly 15 years when the Indiana Jones actor was sent overseas to reprise
While there were rumors that the marriage had begun to become “rocky” after Episode IV was filmed, there was no doubt that there were issues after Ford stepped out on his marriage. Because the relationship ended in divorce before The Empire Strikes Back was even released in theaters, many believe that Ford’s affair finally caused the marriage’s demise, implying Fisher was to blame.
During the three months that The Empire Strikes Back was filmed, no one was the wiser that Ford and Fisher were having an affair. The infidelity on The Fugitive star’s part was not revealed until years later when Fisher wrote a memoir detailing what had transpired between the two.
Ford was confused given that the affair had occurred so many decades before. “My affair with Harrison was a very long one-night stand,” Fisher wrote in her memoir. “I was relieved when it ended. I didn’t approve of myself.” Fisher went on to write, “I loved him and he allowed it.” This meant that while Fisher had strong feelings for Ford, the affair for him was nothing more than a physical one.
Ford has not denied the fact that the affair happened. But when the notoriously private actor was asked about how he felt about having the affair detailed by Fisher, his answer was very short and succinct. “It was strange,” Ford stated. “For me.” When asked what he thought about the affair being written about, the Witness star answered, “Oh, I don’t know. I don’t know. You know, with Carrie’s untimely passing, I don’t really feel that it’s a subject that I want to discuss.”
Ford has not discussed the affair in the years since the memoir was released. In fact, he said he has not even read the memoir. And because of this, the world may never truly know if Fisher was the reason for his first divorce or not. Ford did not want to speak at length, or at all about The Princess Diarist or his affair with Fisher. However, the Hannah and Her Sisters star was happy to talk about her time with Ford during The Empire Strikes Back for a time, until she eventually regretted writing about it.
Ford did not want to speak at length, or at all about The Princess Diarist or his affair with Fisher. However, the Hannah and Her Sisters star was happy to talk about her time with Ford during The Empire Strikes Back for a time, until she eventually regretted writing about it. “Whatever was the state of his marriage, which ended soon after the filming of Star Wars for reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with me, I don’t think of Harrison in any way as a ‘womanizer’,” Fisher wrote.
“I think he was lonely in England.” While still married to Marquardt, there were unsubstantiated rumors that Ford was having trysts with several women. In fact, his second wife and ET screenwriter, Melissa Mathison, who would eventually be known for receiving one of the largest divorce settlements in Hollywood history, was the woman who it was speculated caused the demise of Ford’s marriage to Marquardt. It was learned the two had worked together on the film, Apocalypse Now years prior to Star Wars being filmed, hinting that Harrison’s love life was more complicated than imagined. It may never be known what the real reason was that Ford’s first marriage ended.
But having an affair with a co-star likely did not help the situation, specifically if the marriage was already on shaky ground. It was clear from the memoir that Fisher did not believe Ford cared for her in a way that would ever lead to a relationship. However, that did not stop Fisher from loving Ford, a love that lasted until she died. “Yes, I love him,” Fisher explained about Ford. “I’ll always feel something for him. I love Mark, too, but I love Mark more like a sibling. You can’t pretend something for so long without some of it coming true.” By reading the diary entries that were turned into a memoir, it is clear that Ford did not have any feelings of love for Fisher.
However, this could be because he was never made aware of how Fisher felt about him. When asked if Ford knew anything about her “intense” feelings for him, Fisher responded after the memoir was released, “I don’t think, until now, he knew the intensity of my feelings.” While Fisher held onto feelings of love for Ford over the years, she realized it would never be returned. And that was something Fisher had to find a way to move past.
“Even in the diary I don’t like to admit it, because it’s a failure,” Fisher said about her feelings of love toward Ford. “No, it’s not a failure – it’s unreciprocated love. Which I guess is a type of failure.” Fisher and Ford’s affair was a sign that there was something amiss in Ford’s first marriage. And while the affair may have been the last straw for Marquardt, clearly, Carrie Fisher isn’t to blame.
