Rumors of Tom Cruise playing Iron Man began circulating in 2022, 

after it was reported that Marvel Studios was considering introducing another version of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). 

Cruise was considered for the role in 2008, but ultimately Robert Downey Jr. was chosen.

Cruise has denied this rumor, saying he is not interested in playing Iron Man. 

He said he loved what Downey Jr. did. did with the role and he didn’t want to try to imitate him.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, producer Kevin Feige confirmed that Cruise will not play Iron Man in the MCU. 

He said that Marvel Studios considered Cruise for the role, but they decided that Downey Jr. is the most suitable choice.

Feige said: “We considered Tom Cruise for the role of Iron Man, but in the end we decided that Robert Downey Jr. was the best choice. He has been a part of the MCU for 10 years and he has created a classic character.”

So for now, there are no plans for Tom Cruise to play Iron Man in the MCU.
