Katy Perry was among the big winners at the People’s Choice Awards in Hollywood last night as she collected two gongs.
Perry, whose infectious pop hits California Gurls and Teenage Dream dominated the charts last year, picked up trophies for favourite female artist and favourite online sensation, beating the flamboyant Lady Gaga.
Speaking to the audience, she said: ‘I’ve had an incredible year.’
Taking to Twitter after the ceremony, Perry posted: ‘OH MY WE WON TWO PEOPLES CHOICE AWARDS! Thank you SO much! I really appreciate all ur continuous love & support! Remember u have the POWER!’
In the movie stakes it was Twilight which stole the limelight, with the latest movie collecting four awards.
Organisers said a record 175 million votes were cast on social media and on the Internet for the favourite stars of television, movies and music in an awards show that is totally fan-driven and marked the start of the Hollywood awards season.
Despite being the earliest of Hollywood’s glittering awards shows, the People’s Choice picks gave few clues this year to the likely winners of industry-voted awards such as the Oscars or the Screen Actors Guild honours.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment of the popular vampire romance, won for favourite movie and favourite drama.
Twilight star Kristen Stewart beat veterans like Angelina Jolie and Julia Roberts to take the favourite movie actress trophy.
