Last month marked a happy 8th anniversary for one of Hollywood’s most devoted couples, but you probably had no idea.
At 76, Harrison Ford still has plenty of the charm that made him a Hollywood heartthrob, but the veteran actor is actually spoken for.
His long and winding romantic history includes two failed marriages and a steamy affair with co-star Carrie Fisher.
But he didn’t meet “the one” until TV star Calista Flockhart walked into his life
Flockhart and Ford first met at the 2002 Golden Globes, where it was rumored the Ally McBeal star was so eager to meet Ford she spilled her drink on him.
But she swears that’s not true.
“We were having a conversation for maybe 20 minutes before the wine spilled, and the truth is, Harrison spilled the wine,” Flockhart insists.
No matter who spilled the wine, the couple were instantly smitten and started dating.
Hilariously, Flockhart’s much younger co-star, James Marsden, said he chaperoned the two lovebirds on their first dates.
The couple kept their romance quiet at first – Ford was still married to his estranged second wife – but by 2003 Ford couldn’t hide his feelings any long.
“I’m in love,” he confessed to Hello! Magazine.
The couple moved in together the same year, and by 2009 Ford was ready to pop the question.
He proposed on Valentine’s Day, during a romantic getaway with Flockhart, and she said yes.
They married the next year in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and kept things very casual. Reports say Ford wore jeans to the ceremony and Flockhart donned a white sundress.
One of the biggest changes Ford made since meeting Flockhart was becoming a parent again in his 60s.
A year before they met, Flockhart had adopted a baby boy named Liam, and he was still an infant when Ford moved in with her.
“She’s brought a child back into my home,” the actor told Reader’s Digest. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to be part of a child’s growing up, which is always an endless springtime.”
And the proud dad bonded with his new son easily – Ford has four other children from his past marriages.
“On the weekends, I do whatever Calista and Liam want to do,” Ford told People.
“We’ll take a couple of hours on Sunday morning to go motorcycle riding or go for a hike. I just made a birdhouse with my son.”
Ford also shared how impressed he was by Flockhart’s decision to adopt a child as a single parent.
“She’s devoted herself to Liam and has done a really wonderful job raising him,” he bragged. “I’m happy to now have a part of the job.”
But Flockhart has devoted herself to Ford, too. When the amateur pilot’s 2015 crash kept him in the hospital, she was by his side the entire time.
Ford was bedridden with a broken back, shattered ankle and pelvis, and a nasty head wound. Sources told People that Flockhart “arrived [at the hospital] early every morning and returned home late every night.”
“My wife, who is a wonderful lady, understands my passion for aviation, she understands what it means to me and flies with me to this day,” Ford said after recovering.
Yes, Flockhart and Ford have answered plenty of questions about their May-December romance through the years.
Now 54 and 76 respectively, they were 38 and 60 when they first met – that’s a 22-year difference.
But Flockhart insists the age gap “doesn’t faze me.”
“Sometimes I even say, ‘Wow, I keep forgetting that he’s 22 years older than me,'” she explains.
