Harrison Ford paid tribute to his screen father Sean Connery after the actor died Saturday at age 90.
‘He was my father …not in life .. but in ‘Indy 3′,’ Ford, 78, said in a statement to Variety published Monday.
Connery portrayed Henry Jones Sr in the 1989 sequel Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.
‘You don’t know pleasure until someone pays you to take Sean Connery for a ride in the side car of a Russian motorcycle bouncing along a bumpy
God, we had fun — if he’s in heaven, I hope they have golf courses. Rest in peace, dear friend,’ Ford added in his statement.
Hollywood giant George Lucas, 76, who created the Indiana Jones franchise also honored Connery in a written statement.
‘Sir Sean Connery, through his talent and drive, left an indelible mark in cinematic history. His audiences spanned generations, each with favorite roles he played. He will always hold a special place in my heart as Indy’s dad. With an air of intelligent authority and sly sense of comedic mischief, only someone like Sean Connery could render Indiana Jones immediately into boyish regret or relief through a stern fatherly chiding or rejoiceful hug,’ Lucas said in the statement, according to Variety.
Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade was the third installment in the franchise and centered on Indiana searching for his father Henry, a Holy Grail scholar kidnapped by Nazis.
The film was released by Paramount Pictures in May 1989 and earned $474.3 million at the worldwide box office.
Connery received BAFTA and Golden Globe Award nominations for his work in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.
The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of fictional British secret agent James Bond and starred in seven Bond films from 1962 to 1983 after originating the film role in Dr. No.
Many co-stars and entertainment industry figures have paid tribute to Connery since the announcement of his death, including: Sam Neill, Nicolas Cage, Robert De Niro, Tippi Hedren, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Shirley Bassey, Kevin Costner, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Barbra Streisand and John Cleese, as well as former Bond stars George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and current 007 Daniel Craig, 52.
‘It is with such sadness that I heard of the passing of one of the true greats of cinema. Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond and so much more,’ Craig said in a statement.
‘He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster. He will continue to influence actors and film-makers alike for years to come. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Wherever he is, I hope there is a golf course,’ added Craig, who will play Agent 007 for the fifth and final time in No Time To Die scheduled for release in April 2021.
