One of the internet’s fiercest fanbases just got the shout out of the year.
While accepting the Video Vanguard Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, rapper Nicki Minaj took a moment to thank her fanbase, the Barbz.
“The Barbz, Barbz!!!” Minaj yelled to raucous applause. “Thank you so much. You guys are my babies, but I have a new baby,” Minaj added, talking about her child, who she calls Papa Bear.
The Barbz have always been known to be a heavily LGBTQ+ group of people.
In fact, its most famous member is none other than Lil Nas X, who admitted to not only being a Barb, but also running a Minaj stan account after years of speculation that he’d been behind the keyboard of one.
Prior to her lengthy speech, Minaj gave an electric performance that included hits such as “Anaconda,” “Super Freaky Girl” and “Moment 4 Life,” as well as deep cuts like “All Things Go” from her 2015 album The Pinkprint.
Minaj also thanked the rappers who inspired her artistic flow, including Lil Wayne, Foxy Brown, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh.
Minaj also thanked artists who gave her opportunities early in her career, including Lil Wayne, who signed her to Young Money, Madonna — who put her on her song “Give Me All Your Luvin’” and had her join her 2012 Super Bowl performance.
Minaj also, surprisingly, thanked Mariah Carey, who featured Minaj on the remix of her single “Up Out My Face.”
